In the surrounding areas, this resort town offers the bird watchers a treasure trove of varied and beautiful bird species in the different eco-systems found here. Everyone assumed that the name Sedgefield came form the farm on which the village was laid out but it in not as simple as that. Sedgesfield was actually named in honour of George Barrington, the 5th viscount and rector of a coal-mining village named Sedgefield in County Durham in Britain. The original Khoi name for Sedgefield was "Gonnas Vlakte". The name Sedgefield in Afrikaans means Ruigtevlei and this was and appropriate name because of the abundance of water plants lying along the vlei's edge. Between George and Knysna the popular Outeniqua Choo-tjoe train follows a seaside Route that passes over lakes and beaches, included in this route is Sedgefield. The 2 trains (one is leaving each morning from both George and Knysna stations) passes each other on the Sedgefield station. Tourists who wish to explore the village of Sedgefield can get off the train at this point and board again during the return trip in the afternoon. Permanent people residing in Sedgefield are estimated at approximately 7840 according to the 2001 census taken. With the 150 building plans that is submitted during 2002 is a proven reflection of Economic Activity & Growth on the ongoing growth of the town and 50% of this plans was for new homes.
